MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has secured the support of more than 5 million students nationwide to kick off the government's plan to make the country a greener place to live in.
As part of the National Greening Program, students, officials and community leaders in 42,000 villages will plant 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares of denuded and marginal lands all over the country from 2011 to 2016.
Elementary students or those who are in grades 5 and 6 and high school students will focus on the denuded areas planting effort, while elementary schools will support the nursery efforts, the DENR said.
Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon Paje said Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala will also mobilize the personnel of the Bureau of Soils and Water Management in all regions to support the greening efforts, particularly its biofertilizer requirements.
Paje said the program is also an economic program, complementing the country's goal of achieving food security and alleviating poverty.

And a Question raise by Gov. Joey Salceda of Albay >Until you start analyzing: 1. This means every student will plant 3,000 trees each. 2. 3,000 trees would need 7 hectares each. 3. And more critically, who would nurture those trees? Anecdotally yet believably, tree planting has 80% mortality. 4. Who would produce the 1.5bn planting materials? 5. Are these endemic species?.
and What can u say???
